Group short term disability is a benefit paid to employees that are disabled due to a sickness or accident. Coverage usually starts between 1 and 7 days after the condition starts leaving the employee unable to work and may last up to 26 weeks.
In New Jersey and New York the coverage is mandatory and the benefit is based on a percentage of the employees salary and is capped at a maximum amount that is different in each state. The employer can buy additional coverage for the employees to supplement the state amount.
